Liposuction, or "liposculpture", as it is sometimes called, is the most popular aesthetic procedure in North America year after year and demand continues to climb. Liposuction appeals to men and women within a very wide age range and the reason is obvious.

Liposuction permanently removes areas of localized fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. The chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, abdomen, back, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles are all areas of the body that respond well to the Liposuction procedure.

The fat cells that are removed during the Liposuction procedure do not grow back. If you gain weight after undergoing Liposuction, there will be fewer fat cells in the areas that were treated. The weight gain will be distributed more evenly, rather than accumulating in the areas that were problematic in the past.

Liposuction surgery provides excellent results for patients battling localized areas of fat, or "trouble spots". Liposuction is not considered an effective substitute for overall weight loss.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasonic Liposuction is a technique in which ultrasonic energy is used to target the fat cells only, leaving the surrounding structures such as blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues undamaged. During this procedure, ultrasound waves are used to slowly liquefy the fat before gently removing it from the body. The ultrasound waves are delivered into the fat from the tip of a small probe that is introduced under the skin through tiny incisions. Low suction vacuuming is all that is required to remove the emulsified fat from the treated areas. The ultrasonic probe stimulates the skin, which encourages skin contraction. As there is less trauma delivered to the region, there is less bleeding, bruising and swelling associated with using this method.

Post Operative Course after Ultrasonic Liposuction

Patients are required to wear a compression garment, which is provided, for 3 to 6 weeks after surgery. This compression decreases post-operative swelling and bruising and enhances skin tightening. Patients are usually up and around within a day, return to work and most activities in 3 to 5 days. More strenuous activities should be avoided for 2 to 3 weeks.

Concurrent Procedures

Ultrasonic Liposuction and/or SmartLipo Laser Lipolysis is very commonly combined with breast surgery as well as the tummy tuck procedure (Abdominoplasty). Often SmartLipo can be combined with Ultrasonic Liposuction to remove larger areas of fat and optimize skin tightening to enhance the final aesthetic outcome.

SmartLipo™

Dr. Barr now offers the latest in body sculpting technology: SmartLipo™, the surgical procedure that employs the power and versatility of lasers to melt away fat. SmartLipo™ is the first and only laser-assisted lipolysis system to offer a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of fat. By using a single laser fiber to heat and disintegrate fat cells inside the body, SmartLipo™ produces even less bleeding, bruising, and trauma than ultrasonic liposuction, and significantly less than traditional liposuction. The laser coagulates small blood vessels, resulting in far shorter recovery times, which can be as short as a day or two.

Using SmartLipo™ technology, Dr. Barr can also cause a noticeable tightening of the skin in the treated area, resulting in a leaner, more streamlined appearance. SmartLipo™ is sometimes used for its tightening power alone when skin laxity, rather than fat removal, is of concern.

SmartLipo™ is best for treating localized fatty deposits in patients who are in generally good health and are relatively close to their ideal body weight. Ultrasonic liposuction is still the preferred method of fat removal, however, when the area to be removed is larger and/or less localized. This can be assessed and discussed during consultation with Dr. Barr.

SmartLipo™ Technology

SmartLipo is different in that it uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of the patient's skin. The laser actually ruptures fat cells, and the resulting oily, liquid substance is then removed through a tiny incision in the skin by the surgeon. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. Research has shown that little, if any, fat is reabsorbed back into the body. The minimal invasiveness of the procedure allows patients to see faster results and to experience fewer complications. In addition, SmartLipo’s patients need only a local anesthetic for this procedure, whereas liposuction requires general anesthesia. SmartLipo carries fewer risks than traditional liposuction, and the recovery time is much shorter. SmartLipo patients are typically back to work within 1–2 days following the procedure. Bandages are removed 1–2 weeks after that.

SmartLipo™ FAQs:

How does the Smartlipo™ procedure work?
A very small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis it resulting in collagen shrinkage and therefore skin tightening. Due to the cannula's small size, Smartlipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, - and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe with only minimal side effects.

Is SmartLipo Right for You?
Almost anyone can be a good candidate for SmartLipo. In general, the ideal candidate: (1) is in good health, exercises regularly, is within 25 lbs. of his or her ideal weight; (2) has one or more areas of local body fat deposits that have responded poorly to diet and exercise; and (3) is bothered by these fatty areas, and is motivated to get rid of them permanently.

How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, typically only one treatment is required. The session may last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated.

Do I have to do anything post-treatment?
Any pain or bruising that is present post operatively will be minimal. Many patients are able to return to work immediately but one to two days of rest is recommended.

Does Smartlipo™ treat cellulite?
The procedure may improve cellulite to a certain degree. It will remove fat and tighten sagging skin, however it is not considered a cellulite reduction procedure.

Does laser-assisted liposuction produce permanent results?
Yes. Like conventional or ultrasonic liposuction, results are permanent because the fat cells are removed from the area. Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, the fat cells expand. If weight is gained after the procedure, most of the fat will be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.

What areas of the body can be treated?
Smartlipo LaserbodySculpting is ideal for the neck, jawline, arms, breasts, "bra fat,"abdomen, "love handles," "saddle bags," inner and outer thighs and knees.

How does Smartlipo LaserbodySculpting compare to conventional liposuction?
Conventional liposuction is meant to remove greater amounts of fat. However, since this can leave behind pockets of droopy skin, laser assisted lipolysis is often a perfect complement.

Is there a recovery period?
SmartLipo Laser Body Sculpting is a minimally invasive procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia. Some light trauma can occur, but you'll be able to return to work in a couple of days and resume exercise after 2 weeks.

How many treatments are required?
Typically only one treatment is required.

What is the long-term outcome for most people?
Most patients can see results immediately following the SmartLipo procedure with continued improvement over the following months.

As with traditional and ultrasonic liposuction, the full effect and benefit of the SmartLipo procedure may not be visible for up to one year. The higher the volume of fat removed, the longer it will take to achieve maximum results, as your body needs to adapt to a more significant shape change.

Do I need to stay overnight at Barr Plastic Surgery Centre?
No. SmartLipo is performed as an in-patient procedure under local anesthesia. You won’t be required to stay overnight, since recovery from SmartLipo works best within the comfort of your home.

What if I've already had regular liposuction?
SmartLipo can be extremely effective at improving the aesthetic result of previous liposuction procedures. With the SmartLipo procedure, Dr. Barr can further sculpt or contour those areas on the body that have skin laxity or saggy skin.

What are the main advantages of SmartLipo?

  • It offers the smoothest, best body-contouring results.
  • It entails only a short recovery time.
  • Minimal discomfort is involved.
  • It is safer than traditional liposuction.
  • It tightens the skin around the treatment area.
  • The results are permanent.

Can SmartLipo work on areas that regular liposuction can't?
Yes. The aiming beam at the tip of the SmartLipo laser allows Dr. Barr to be very precise. As such, SmartLipo is very effective at reducing fat in very small areas.

Does the SmartLipo procedure hurt?
Since the SmartLipo procedure is performed under local anesthesia, there is very little pain or discomfort involved. There may be a minor stinging sensation and an impression of tugging at your skin during the SmartLipo treatment, but these discomforts are minimal.
