Cellulaze

Cellulite is a structural problem beneath the surface of the skin and is caused by factors that are often beyond our control. This makes it difficult to be effectively addressed through diet and exercise. Aging, hormones, genetics and weight changes can all play a role in the appearance of cellulite. All of these factors can cause the connective bands beneath the skin’s surface to stiffen. These fibrous bands ultimately enable the surrounding fat cells to become enlarged and push up into the skin. This creates the “cottage cheese” look that so many individuals strive to eliminate. For individuals with thin skin, this look is even more prominent.

Cellulaze is a cellulite reduction treatment that can help patients suffering with cellulite. It is a minimally invasive, laser assisted procedure that works on several levels to thicken and add elasticity to the skin while treating the fibrous bands beneath the surface.

What are the Benefits of the Cellulaze Procedure?

Cellulaze patients often pursue surgery in order to correct a number of issues including dimpled, uneven and puckered skin on the inner and outer thighs and buttocks.

Like the thousands of women who undergo this procedure every year, you too can acquire the smooth, even skin you’ve always wanted, and gain the confidence you deserve.

Preparing for Your Cellulaze Procedure

What is the first step in pursuing the Cellulaze procedure?

The first step when considering Cellulaze treatment is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Barr. The consultation process provides an opportunity for you to obtain important information about the procedure and to have all of your questions answered prior to proceeding with surgery.   It also enables Dr. Barr to properly assess you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Cellulaze.

You should be prepared to discuss your medical history, including any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, all current medications, as well as any significant weight gain or loss.

During your consultation Dr. Barr will carefully examine your areas of concern and assess your general health. The benefits, risks and potential complications associated with the Cellulaze procedure will be thoroughly explained during this consultation. The information provided at this initial consultation will be comprehensive and thorough, and should enable you to make an informed decision as to whether or not Cellulaze is the right choice for you. A comprehensive instruction package will also be provided to you at the time of consultation, and includes instructions for before and after surgery.

Am I a candidate for a Cellulaze procedure?

The ideal candidates for a Cellulaze procedure are healthy men and women who have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes. You may be a good candidate for Cellulaze if you are not significantly overweight but suffer with mild to moderate cellulite. Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Barr is the best way to determine your candidacy for cellulite reduction treatments.

Can I combine another surgery with my Cellulaze procedure?

It may be possible to schedule another surgery at the same time as your Cellulaze procedure. You should be prepared to discuss all possibilities during your consultation with Dr. Barr.

The Procedure

What will I need to do prior to surgery?

Prior to surgery you will be scheduled for a pre-op session with a Registered Nurse to review your medical history and your post-op instructions. She will review all of the information you will need to know in order to prepare yourself for surgery.

Where will my Cellulaze procedure be performed?

Your procedure will be performed within the state-of-the-art facilities of Barr Plastic Surgery, located within the Northern Ontario Surgical Centre.

Northern Ontario Surgical Centre has been awarded accreditation by the CAAASF (Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) for meeting the standards of a hospital in regards to monitoring, emergency and resuscitation equipment. With two levels and entrances that conceal the actual size of the facility, the centre itself spans 8000 square feet and incorporates fully equipped major and minor operating rooms, a monitored multi-bed recovery area, 10 laser and treatment rooms, spacious consultation areas, private offices to discuss financing options, elegant waiting areas and a private waiting room and secure rear entrance/exit for additional privacy when desired.

How does Cellulaze Cellulite Reduction work?

Cellulaze is a minimally invasive, laser assisted procedure that treats cellulite in 3 ways:

  • It treats the dimples in the skin by releasing the fibrous bands which pull down the skin’s surface
  • It levels out the areas of bumpy fat in the area
  • It stimulates collagen production in order to increase your skin’s depth and elasticity thus creating a smoother look

How is cellulite reduction performed?

Cellulaze treatments are performed as an outpatient procedure at Barr Plastic Surgery. The length of the treatment depends entirely on the size of the area being treated, and will be determined during consultation.

Prior to treatment Dr. Barr will use a marker to indicate the areas of cellulite to be treated. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, this procedure may be done under neurolept or under general anesthetic for larger areas. A very small cannula containing a laser fiber is then inserted into the marked areas and energy is delivered directly underneath the skin. This releases the fibrous bands that cause the “cottage cheese” appearance of cellulite, while simultaneously increasing the thickness and quality of your skin. The laser is then used to diminish the lumpy pockets of fat that protrude through the fibrous bands under your skin.

Who can I contact if I have any questions or concerns?

During office hours our Patient Coordinators and nursing staff are available to answer any questions or concerns following your surgery. After hours, Dr. Barr is available by pager.

Recovery

Will I need to stay overnight following my cellulite reduction surgery?

The Cellulaze procedure is an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight stay at Barr Plastic Surgery.

How long will it take me to recover from my Cellulaze procedure?

Dr. Barr’s extensive experience in performing cellulite reduction procedures will help to ensure that your post-operative recovery is minimized. Following your Cellulaze procedure you will experience some bruising and discomfort. You may notice a small amount of fluid leaking from the incision sites and may be instructed to wear a compression garment in order to decrease post operative bruising and swelling. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days and resume regular activities within two weeks. Your progress will be monitored by Dr. Barr through a series of follow up appointments at regular intervals.

Will I have scarring?

Dr. Barr takes every precaution to ensure your scarring is as minimal as possible. However, as with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of scarring from the incisions. Once your incisions have healed there are products that can be used to minimize the redness in scars as well as improve the texture. Reusable silicone strips as well as medical grade topical scar creams are available for purchase that will help to reduce the discolouration found in new scars. Precautions that should be taken to minimize scarring will be discussed during consultation.

How many treatments are required?

Typically only one treatment of Cellulaze is required to achieve the desired level of cellulite reduction.
