Face and Neck Liposuction

Despite healthy diets and regular exercise, many patients struggle  with unwanted fat.  Fat in the face and neck area can be particularly stubborn and difficult to target. Face liposuction is a procedure that can help to remove fat from targeted areas to create a refined facial contour. Dr. Scott Barr specializes in both ultrasonic (VASER) and laser-assisted (SMART Lipo)  liposuction to help achieve a slimmer, sculpted facial appearance.

What is Face and Neck Liposuction

Facial liposuction is popular surgical procedure used for face fat removal as well as neck fat removal. This procedure can help contour your facial appearance by removing excess fat in the region of the jawline, chin, and neck. Facial liposuction can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures. During your consultation with Dr.Barr, he will recommend the best course of action in order to achieve your aesthetic surgery goals.

Сhin Liposuction

Many patients choose to pursue liposuction in neck and chin to address the dreaded double chin. It is common for men and women to develop a double chin with age. Diet and exercise are often unable to target this stubborn area, making liposuction for double chin a highly sought after procedure. Patients who pursue chin liposuction enjoy a slimmer appearing face, a more defined jawline and a neck that looks slender and youthful.

Neck Liposuction Before and After

Preparing for Your Liposuction Procedure

What is the first step in pursuing the liposuction procedure?

The first step when considering liposuction is to schedule your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Barr. The consultation process provides an opportunity for you to obtain important information about the procedure and to have all of your questions answered prior to proceeding with surgery. It also enables Dr. Barr to properly assess you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a liposuction procedure.
You should be prepared to discuss your medical history, medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, all current medications, as well as any significant weight gain or loss.

During your consultation Dr. Barr will carefully examine your areas of concern and assess your general health. Different surgical approaches and options will be discussed and he will explain which surgical approach would be best suited to you based on your individual characteristics and aesthetic goals.

The benefits, risks and potential complications associated with liposuction will be thoroughly explained during this consultation. The information provided at this initial consultation will be comprehensive and thorough, and should enable you to make an informed decision as to whether or not liposuction is the right choice for you. A comprehensive instruction package will be provided to you at the time of consultation, and includes instructions for before and after surgery.

Am I a candidate for a liposuction procedure?
The ideal candidates for a liposuction procedure are healthy patients who have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes. Patients should be a stable and healthy weight, with firm, elastic skin with pockets of excess fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Can I combine another surgery with my liposuction procedure?
It may be possible to schedule another surgery at the same time as your liposuction procedure. Liposuction is often added to other surgical procedures to further enhance results. You should be prepared to discuss all possibilities during your consultation with Dr. Barr.

The Procedure

What will I need to do prior to surgery?
Prior to surgery you will be scheduled for a pre-op session with a Registered Nurse to review your medical history and your post-op instructions. She will review all of the information you will need to know to prepare yourself for surgery.
Where will my liposuction procedure be performed?
Your procedure will be performed within the state-of-the-art facilities of Barr Plastic Surgery, located within the Northern Ontario Surgical Centre.

Northern Ontario Surgical Centre has been awarded accreditation by the CAAASF (Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) for meeting the standards of a hospital in regards to monitoring, emergency and resuscitation equipment. With two levels and entrances that conceal the actual size of the facility, the centre itself spans 8000 square feet and incorporates fully equipped major and minor operating rooms, a monitored multi-bed recovery area, 10 laser and treatment rooms, spacious consultation areas, private offices to discuss financing options, elegant waiting areas and a private waiting room and secure rear entrance/exit for additional privacy when desired.

On occasion, if your liposuction treatment is combined with another procedure such as a breast reduction, it may be performed in the operating room at Health Sciences North. Details of your procedure will be provided for you during the time of consultation.

How is a liposuction procedure performed?
Liposuction itself is an outpatient procedure, performed under either general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation, depending on the type of liposuction procedure and the area being treated. Incision areas are marked and then the cannula is inserted into the skin. The thermal or radio frequency energy or sound waves from the cannula liquifies the fat as the cannula is carefully moved back and forth to remove the fat. Once the fat has been removed, the incisions are sutured and dressing is applied to the area. You will also be given a compression garment to wear in order to minimize swelling and bruising.
Who will administer the anaesthetic?
Often for smaller treatment areas, a general anaesthetic is not required. If it is required, a board-certified anaesthesiologist will administer the general anaesthetic, stay with you during the entire operation, and will be there as you wake up. Administration of local anaesthetic does not require an anesthesiologist.
Who can I contact if I have any questions or concerns?
During office hours our Patient Coordinators and nursing staff are available to answer any questions or concerns following your surgery. After hours, Dr. Barr is available by pager.

Recovery

Will I need to stay overnight following my liposuction procedure?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight stay at Barr Plastic Surgery.
How long will it take me to recover from liposuction?
Dr. Barr’s extensive experience in performing this procedure will help to ensure that your post-operative recovery is minimized. You will be discharged with a dressing in place, and a compression garment which must be worn to help decrease swelling and bruising as well as to help shape your new contours. You may notice a small amount of fluid leaking from your incision sites. This is normal, and some patients may be fitted with surgical drains to help eliminate this fluid.

Depending on your comfort level, you may return back to work within a few days of the procedure. Most patients begin gentle exercise a few weeks after their procedure. Depending on the type of procedure and your personal recovery, you may resume higher impact exercise within 4-6 weeks of your procedure.

Your progress will be monitored by Dr. Barr and his medical team during a series of follow up visits.

Will I have scarring?
Dr. Barr takes every precaution to ensure your scarring is as minimal as possible. However, as with any surgery, there is a risk of scarring from the incisions. Once y our incisions have healed there are products that can be used to minimize the redness in scars as well as improve the texture. Reusable silicone strips as well as medical grade topical scar creams are available for purchase that will help to reduce the discolouration found in new scars. Precautions that should be taken to minimize scarring will be discussed during consultation.
