What is a Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeover plastic surgery is a series or combination of procedures aimed at restoring or enhancing a woman’s figure following pregnancy and childbirth. Each cosmetic surgery mommy makeover plan is customized to meet the personal and aesthetic goals of the individual patient.

What is included in a Mommy Makeover?

There is no one size fits all when it comes to a Mommy Makeover procedure. A custom surgery plan will be created for you during your consultation. Many mommy makeovers consist of a combination of the following procedures.

Breast Lift

Breasts often experience many physical changes during and following pregnancy, regardless of whether you chose to breast feed or not. A Breast Lift, also referred to as a Mastopexy, removes and tightens excess skin, lifts and repositions the nipple and areola and reshapes the breasts.

Breast Augmentation

Many women find that their post-pregnancy breasts are smaller size and appear deflated. Breast Augmentation can enhance the size, volume and shape of the breasts.

Tummy Tuck

The abdomen is a common problem area for many women looking to pursue a Mommy Makeover. While liposuction can address excess fat, it cannot correct the sagging skin, loose muscles and stretch marks that are often a complaint of women who have experienced pregnancy. Tummy tuck surgery creates a firmer, smoother abdomen through the removal of excess fat and skin and the tightening of spread or weakened abdominal muscles. During the tummy tuck, patients also usually undergo concurrent VASER liposculpture of the “muffin top” region.

Liposuction

Increased fat deposits in problem areas if a common occurrence with hormone fluctuations during pregnancy. Many women complain of stubborn fat on their muffin top region, bra strap area, back, waist, and thighs following pregnancy. VASER liposuction can be used to permanently remove fat from targeted areas to contour and sculpt your silhouette.

Labiaplasty

An enlarged labia, where the labia minora (inner labia) protrudes beneath the labia majora (outer labia). In some cases pregnancy and childbirth can cause or aggravate this condition. A Labiaplasty, also known as a Labia Reduction can remove this excess skin to improve the appearance of the labia as well as alleviate any pain or discomfort caused by it. Patients often consider a hood reduction in conjunction with a labioplasty.

What is the first step in pursuing the “Mommy Makeover” procedures?

The first step when considering a surgical Mommy Makeover is to schedule your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Barr. The consultation process provides an opportunity for you to obtain important information about the procedure and to have all of your questions answered prior to proceeding with surgery. It also enables Dr. Barr to properly assess you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Mommy Makeover surgery.

You should be prepared to discuss your medical history, including any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, all current medications, as well as any significant weight gain or loss.

During your consultation Dr. Barr will carefully examine your areas of concern. Different surgical approaches and options will be discussed and he will explain which surgical approach would be best suited to you based on your individual characteristics and aesthetic goals.

The information provided at this initial consultation will be comprehensive and thorough, and should enable you to make an informed decision as to whether or not surgery is the right choice for you. A comprehensive instruction package will also be provided to you at the time of consultation, and includes instructions for before and after surgery.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

What you can expect on the day of your surgery will be dependent on the types of surgery selected as part of your postpartum makeover transformation.  During your consultation Dr. Barr will detail your surgery plan and discuss what is to be expected from each procedure, including which surgeries can be performed concurrently and which require time in between.

How long will it take me to recover from my “Mommy Makeover” procedures?

Dr. Barr’s extensive experience in performing surgical procedures will help to ensure that your post-operative recovery is uneventful. Recovery for each patient will vary, depending on the number and type of procedures that are included in the surgery. Generally patients can expect recovery to take 7 days to two  weeks.  Most patients start light exercise at two weeks and return to the gym without restrictions at  6 weeks. Your progress will be monitored by Dr. Barr and his medical team during follow up appointments. During your initial consultation Dr. Barr will provide you with a detailed plan for your mommy makeover and discuss when you will be able to resume activities, based on the procedures that he has recommended for you.

Common Misconceptions About Mommy Makeover Surgery

While a tummy tuck and breast surgery are two of the more popular surgeries explored by woman undergoing a mommy makeover, the combination of surgeries is completely customized to meet your aesthetic goals and needs.

2) A Mommy Makeover is an alternative to diet and exercise.

The procedures you select as part of your mommy makeover are not weight loss procedures. These procedures are aimed at addressing changes to your body that have occurred that cannot be solved by diet and exercise, such as sagging skin, loose muscles, and stubborn fat deposits.

3) Mommy Makeovers are only for young mothers.

There is no “appropriate age” to have a mommy makeover. Dr. Barr has done Mommy Makeovers on women in their 20s who have completed their families to women who have decided to have their concerns addressed at a later age.  As long as a woman is healthy she can pursue these procedures at any age.
