LiposuctionDespite healthy diets and regular exercise, many patients struggle to lose deposits of unwanted fat. Difficult to target areas include the lower abdomen, love handles, thighs, back and arms. Excess fat in these areas are often a cause of frustration for patients, particularly when they are unable to wear certain types of clothing for fear that it will accentuate these areas. Liposuction is a procedure that can help to remove fat from targeted areas to create a smoother, slimmer silhouette. Dr. Scott Barr specializes in both ultrasonic, laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo™) to help sculpt shapely contours for his patients.

Like the thousands of patients who undergo this procedure every year, you too can acquire the proportional measurements you’ve always wanted, and gain the confidence you deserve.
Preparing for Your Liposuction Procedure
What is the first step in pursuing the liposuction procedure? The first step when considering liposuction is to schedule your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Barr. The consultation process provides an opportunity for you to obtain important information about the procedure and to have all of your questions answered prior to proceeding with surgery. It also enables Dr. Barr to properly assess you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a liposuction procedure. You should be prepared to discuss your medical history, medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, all current medications, as well as any significant weight gain or loss. During your consultation Dr. Barr will carefully examine your areas of concern and assess your general health. Different surgical approaches and options will be discussed and he will explain which surgical approach would be best suited to you based on your individual characteristics and aesthetic goals. The benefits, risks and potential complications associated with liposuction will be thoroughly explained during this consultation. The information provided at this initial consultation will be comprehensive and thorough, and should enable you to make an informed decision as to whether or not liposuction is the right choice for you. A comprehensive instruction package will be provided to you at the time of consultation, and includes instructions for before and after surgery.
Am I a candidate for a liposuction procedure? The ideal candidates for a liposuction procedure are healthy patients who have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes. Patients should be a stable and healthy weight, with firm, elastic skin with pockets of excess fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Can I combine another surgery with my liposuction procedure? It may be possible to schedule another surgery at the same time as your liposuction procedure. Liposuction is often added to other surgical procedures to further enhance results. You should be prepared to discuss all possibilities during your consultation with Dr. Barr.
What will I need to do prior to surgery?Prior to surgery you will be scheduled for a pre-op session with a Registered Nurse to review your medical history and your post-op instructions. She will review all of the information you will need to know to prepare yourself for surgery.
Where will my liposuction procedure be performed?Your procedure will be performed within the state-of-the-art facilities of Barr Plastic Surgery, located within the Northern Ontario Surgical Centre. Northern Ontario Surgical Centre has been awarded accreditation by the CAAASF (Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) for meeting the standards of a hospital in regards to monitoring, emergency and resuscitation equipment. With two levels and entrances that conceal the actual size of the facility, the centre itself spans 8000 square feet and incorporates fully equipped major and minor operating rooms, a monitored multi-bed recovery area, 10 laser and treatment rooms, spacious consultation areas, private offices to discuss financing options, elegant waiting areas and a private waiting room and secure rear entrance/exit for additional privacy when desired. On occasion, if your liposuction treatment is combined with another procedure such as a breast reduction, it may be performed in the operating room at Health Sciences North. Details of your procedure will be provided for you during the time of consultation.
What are the different types of liposuction procedures? There are a number of different types of liposuction procedures which include tumescent liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, laser assisted liposuction (Smart Lipo) and radio frequency assisted liposuction (Body Tite). The type of liposuction procedure that is best suited to your particular needs will be discussed with you during consultation with Dr. Barr. Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a large amount of anaesthetic solution into the treatment areas. The liquid causes the compartments of fat to become firm or tense, allowing the liposuction cannula to move smoothly beneath the skin as the fat is removed. The fluid effectively numbs the treatment area and also minimizes the risk of bleeding and bruising. Patients are left with very small incision marks which will fade over time. Ultrasonic liposuction is a technique that delivers ultrasonic energy (sounds waves) to fat in order to break it apart and liquefy it prior to removal. Tumescent liquid is often injected and then the ultrasonic energy breaks down the fat prior to being removed by a cannula. This procedure is performed under either local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia, depending on the amount of correction required. Laser-assisted liposuction (also known as SmartLipo) is a technique that uses low-energy laser energy to melt and liquefy the fat, which is then removed through a small cannula. Using SmartLipo technology, Dr. Barr can also provide noticeable tightening of the skin in the treatment area, resulting in a leaner, more streamlined appearance. SmartLipo is sometimes used for its tightening power alone when skin laxity, rather than fat removal is of concern. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it treats fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. BodyTite™ uses radio frequency energy to liquefy fat cells before they are removed by a liposuction cannula. The radio frequency energy also coagulates small blood vessels which minimizes the risk of bruising. While traditional liposuction can remove fat deposits, it does not treat skin laxity. BodyTite has the ability to simultaneously form and tighten the treatment area, allowing for superior contouring results. Rather than general anaesthetic, BodyTite is performed under either neurolept or general anaesthetic depending on the amount of correction needed. The type of liposuction treatment that is best suited to your particular goals will be detailed for you by Dr. Barr during your consultation.
How is a liposuction procedure performed?Liposuction itself is an outpatient procedure, performed under either general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation, depending on the type of liposuction procedure and the area being treated. Incision areas are marked and then the cannula is inserted into the skin. The thermal or radio frequency energy or sound waves from the cannula liquifies the fat as the cannula is carefully moved back and forth to remove the fat. Once the fat has been removed, the incisions are sutured and dressing is applied to the area. You will also be given a compression garment to wear in order to minimize swelling and bruising.
Who will administer the anaesthetic?Often for smaller treatment areas, a general anaesthetic is not required. If it is required, a board-certified anaesthesiologist will administer the general anaesthetic, stay with you during the entire operation, and will be there as you wake up. Administration of local anaesthetic does not require an anesthesiologist.
